Thanks to a $27,000 Florida Department of Transportation grant, we have continued to conduct a series of distracted driver operations in the City of St. Cloud, designed to discourage the use of cellphones and to reinforce safe driving habits – ultimately reducing distracted driving crashes and injuries.
While all SCPD Officers are on the alert for distracted driving, this grant funding pays for additional Officers – dedicated specifically to the operation – so that our normal patrol operations are not affected.
On August 7, we stopped 79 drivers; each receiving educational materials about the fines for violating Florida’s Ban on Texting While Driving law. 48 were issued citations, and 33 received warnings (for unrelated offenses).
