ATTENTION PARENTS of students: Highlands County Traffic Operations is updating the timings on all flashing school zone signals within the county over the winter break.
By state law, flashing school zone signals alert motorists to the presence of a school zone and reduced speed limits and must be in place 30 minutes before and after the start of school. Speed restrictions may be earlier at schools with breakfast programs that operate before regular school hours. All of this is based on school start and end times for all elementary, middle and high schools.
Some flashing school zone signals cover multiple schools and will be active longer than others.
When school starts back up in January, please be mindful of the electronic flashing school zone lights and follow the posted speed limit.
