Sexual predator facing more time behind bars

James Robert May Jr. – a 57-year-old sexual predator who has spent approximately 30 of the last 33 years in either prison, jail or the Jimmy Ryce Florida Civil Commitment Center – is facing up to 30 more years behind bars.

May was already in the Highlands County Jail yesterday when he was served with an arrest warrant for two counts of lewd or lascivious behavior (a second-degree felony) and contributing to the delinquency of a minor (a misdemeanor) after a Special Victims Unit investigation revealed that he had been attempting to groom a child.

May attempted to befriend the child at a local church (which he was attending under a false name), giving the child gifts and convincing the child to pull up their shirt so May could take a photo of their midsection.

The incident came to light when a friend of the victim told the victim’s family about May’s concerning behavior.

The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office urges parents to talk to their children and make sure they know that they should always report an adult who is making inappropriate contact with them or their friends. See something, say something works.
