K-9s track down shooting suspect after three-mile chase

A Sebring man is in the Highlands County Jail on a charge after shooting a man Friday night and being located after a three-mile track by multiple Highlands County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Units.

Deputies were called to a home on Twitty Road in Sebring at 8:41 p.m. about a shooting. When they arrived, they found a man who had been shot in the back. It was learned that the suspect, later identified as 55-year-old Jose Agapioto Diaz, had fled the scene in a vehicle.

The vehicle was later located on East Twitty Road, which is where the K-9 track began. The trail led through three miles of groves and involved K-9s Hooch and Hank (both bloodhounds) and Patrol K-9 Gentry. K-9 Hank eventually found Diaz more than two hours later hiding under an orange tree near East Twitty Road and Skipper Road. Diaz was taken into custody and a gun was found where he had been hiding under the tree.

The victim was flown to an area trauma center in critical condition.
