CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Division 2 Conference Commissioner’s Association (D2 CCA) has announced the regional winners of the 2023-24 Scholar-Athletes of the Year awards with former Florida Southern College swimmer Kyle Micallef representing the South region.
Micallef, a native of Melbourne, Australia, finished his four-year career with the Moccasins as one of the best to enter the pool. The sprinter ended his FSC career as Florida Southern’s 28th individual national champion as the NCAA Division II 50 freestyle National Champion in the 2024 finals. The first 50 free national champion in program history, Micallef had a stellar career with accolades in and out of the pool. Micallef was most recently named the Sunshine State Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and selected as the College Sports Communicators Academic Team Member of the Year for Men’s Swimming. A 22-time All-American, Micallef represented the country of Malta at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, competing in the 50M freestyle as the fourth FSC student-athlete ever to compete in the Olympics.
Back-to-back CSC Academic All-American honors, including the program’s second straight Academic Team Member of the Year award, and three straight All-SSC honors, paired with his national championship, highlighted his four-year career. During his career, Micallef earned three CSCAA scholar All-American laurels, two Academic All-District nods, two D2ADA academic achievement awards, three SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll selections, three FSC President’s Scholar listings, and three FSC Dean’s Lists accolades.
In addition to his national title in the 50 free, Micallef finished with six All-American honors at the 2024 finals and won the 50 free at the conference championships the month prior. Micallef won the 50 free three years in a row at the SSC Championships and added a 100 free individual title in the 2022-23 season. He is a four-time SSC Swimmer of the Week winner and holds five FSC records, including three SSC records in relays and the 50 free (19.28 in 2024). Micallef’s 22 All-American honors tie for fourth all-time among FSC men’s swimming, having qualified for the NCAA finals all four years.
Each of the regional winners advanced to the national ballot for consideration for the 2023-24 Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Conference offices were permitted to submit one male and one female nominee for the overall awards. Upon receipt of all nominees, voting was conducted by the commissioners within each of the following regions – Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, Southeast, South Central and West – to select the following regional winners.
