A traffic stop last night (June 4) by members of the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Unit – who were conducting a drug interdiction patrol on US 27 – resulted in the arrest of two people and the seizure of more than a kilogram of cocaine and more than $11,000 in cash.

CSU detectives pulled over a black Toyota 4-Runner that was headed north on US 27 near Stryker Road in Avon Park just after 11 p.m. The driver, 45-year-old Noel Hernandez-Alvarez of Philadelphia, Penn., made statements that there might be cocaine in the car. Inside the car, detectives located a backpack that contained a wrapped brick of cocaine that weighed 1,098.6 grams (2.42 pounds). They also found a purse belonging to the passenger, 50-year-old Luz Maria Carrasquillo-Figuero, also of Philadelphia. Inside the purse was $11,049 wrapped in rubber bands. Hernandez told detectives Carrasquillo is his wife.
