On Sunday, December 5, 2021, 36-year old Antonio Smiley was riding his bicycle on 1st Street NW near Stroud Road in the Kathleen area of Lakeland, when he was struck by a vehicle from behind at around 6:15 pm.
The vehicle that hit Antonio drove away from the scene.
When first responders arrived at the scene, Antonio’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, but after arriving at the hospital, Antonio Smiley passed away.
A witness of the crash told deputies that the vehicle that hit Antonio was an older model white Ford E350 work van. A residential security camera captured the van on video as it drove past that area.
The van had damage to the right front passenger side area and the headlight on that side was broken.
The vehicle has never been located; the driver has never been identified.
