MIAMI — After weather likely prevented Polk State Soccer from picking up its first win on Monday night, it was Miami Dade College that stood in the way on Thursday. The Sharks scored late to down the Eagles in the Region 8 opener, 2-1.
Tessa Abreu put Miami Dade ahead for good with a goal in the 71st minute. The Sharks finished with a 9-8 shot advantage and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
After Miami Dade’s Camila Martins Viera got the scoring started in the 26th minute, Thina Ganto had the equalizer in the 55th minute. Natasha Muchakati added the assist for Polk State.
Madison Caustic led Polk State (0-2, 0-1 Region 8) with three shots. Noemi Casique added two. Leona Kraus finished with three saves in goal.
With the loss, Polk State falls to 0-2 for the first time since 2019. The Eagles will play their home opener on Tuesday against No. 2 Eastern Florida State College. Match time is set for 5:30 p.m.
