Miguel Luis Cardenas, 31, is in the Highlands County Jail on a litany of charges – including trafficking in fentanyl, kidnapping and robbery – after being arrested last night in Lake Placid.
Deputies responded to a home on Impatiens St. in reference to a domestic dispute involving Cardenas, who had an active felony warrant related to a Sept. 10 incident in Sebring.
When they arrived, Cardenas was on the street in front of the residence. He ran away when deputies approached but was quickly taken into custody. When he was searched, six small plastic baggies, each containing a white powder that tested positive for fentanyl, were discovered in his pocket. The total weight of the powder was 7.2 grams. In his backpack, deputies found a hypodermic needle with 10 units (13.6 grams) of a liquid that also tested positive for fentanyl.
Cardenas was charged last night with trafficking in more than 4 grams of fentanyl, felony and misdemeanor possession of drug equipment, possession of drugs without a prescription, and resisting arrest.
In the Sept. 10 incident, Cardenas is accused of entering the home of an acquaintance, where he battered the victim and would not allowing the victim to leave. He also took the victim’s cell phone. In that incident, Cardenas was charged with kidnapping (with bodily harm), burglary with battery, robbery, petit theft, and criminal mischief.
