Darrisha Shambria Gibson, 32, of Avon Park has been arrested and charged with being an accessory in the armed carjacking, kidnapping and attempted murder that took place on March 22.
Gibson was walking with 29-year-old Joshua Yamir Torres on Main Street in Avon Park when they were picked up by the victim, who was acquainted with Torres.
While the victim was driving south on SR 17, Torres pulled out a pistol and used it to strike the victim in the face, breaking the victim’s nose. The victim was made to pull over and Gibson took over driving the car while Torres held the victim at gunpoint in the back seat.
Gibson drove to a secluded spot near Basket Lake, where Torres made the victim strip down to his underwear and then tried to shoot him in the head. The pistol malfunctioned, allowing the victim to fight back.
During the struggle, Gibson provided a bottle to Torres to use as a weapon and also threw another bottle at the victim. The victim was able to flee into a nearby orange grove while Torres and Gibson fled in the victim’s vehicle.
Gibson is charged with attempted felony murder, aggravated battery, kidnapping, armed carjacking and false imprisonment. She is being held without bail in the Highlands County Jail.
Note: Not all arrests result in convictions. Everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
