Phone Scams In Highlands County

Reminder: Law enforcement does not call you and demand money

These calls just never seem to go away, so we figured we would warn everyone again.

This particular case we heard about today, the caller claimed to be Deputy King and then turned the phone over to a Lt. Callahan with the HCSO. (We do not have anyone by those names, but that is beside the point. Sometimes they actually get it right and use names of actual HCSO deputies, but the name doesn’t really matter).

No law enforcement agency, from the local police department to the sheriff to the FBI, will EVER call you and demand money. Repeat: LAW ENFORCEMENT WILL NEVER CONTACT YOU AND DEMAND MONEY.

If someone contacts you claiming to be from any law enforcement agency (or any governmental agency for that matter) and says you must immediately pay money to avoid some sort of consequences, that is 100 PERCENT A SCAM.

The scammers are taking victims for their entire life savings sometimes. Please talk to your family, friends and neighbors about this and make sure they know the signs of a scam.
