Publix plans to open a new 50,000-square-foot location in the southern region of Winter Haven.
Orlando-based Windercrest Development Group Inc., filed construction plans last week with the city of Winter Haven for the new grocery store with a drive-thru pharmacy and separate liquor store in the Traditions neighborhood at the NE corner of West Lake Ruby Drive and Thompson Nursery Road.
The permit indicates that the development will include a Publix supermarket and a liquor store. Together, the Publix and liquor store will occupy a total of 52,425 square feet, in addition to 8,400 square feet of adjacent inline retail space. The site plan also features two out parcels along Thompson Nursery Road, measuring 1.26 acres and 1 acre. The total project area is 10.8 acres.

For years, a typical Publix prototype store averaged between 46,000 and 48,000 square feet, though the company expanded to 52,000 square feet at Loughman Crossing across from the Providence golf community in Davenport and has another planned at US 27 and Minute Maid Ramp Road 2. Publix is building a larger, 55,000-square-foot prototype at 890 Jersey Rd, just north of Havendale Boulevard.
This Publix would be the fifth location within the city. Currently, there are three operating stores, and the fourth is set to break ground soon, according to Sean Byers, Winter Haven Planning Manager.
The fourth location set to break ground is at Dundee Road (SR 542) in Winter Haven, which includes 2-3 out parcels. The Publix will be 46,000 square feet with 11,200 square feet of retail connected to it.
“We’ve had a very high growth rate for the last four or five years and this has particularly been in the southeast northeast parts of the city,” Byers said. “In the last five years, we’ve issued (around) 1500 permits for single-family homes to the south and southwest of this site. But we’ve also permitted nearly 1300 multifamily units that have been completed, just to the north on Cypress Gardens Boulevard.”
The construction plan shows two new driveway entrances on Thompson Nursery Road and West Lake Ruby Drive. The developer will be required to widen Thompson Nursery Road and West Lake Ruby Drive with a new median and dedicated right-turn lane into the shopping center.
